United Way East Ontario’s Community Builder Award program recognizes the outstanding volunteers and champions that help make our cities and towns a better place to live for everyone. Together with Apt613 we shine the light on volunteers across Prescott-Russell, Ottawa, Lanark County and Renfrew County.

On the evening of Tuesday, May 28, United Way East Ontario visited downtown Ottawa’s YMCA with a special surprise in store for a member of Y’s Men International.

The group was holding its monthly Service Club meeting when Davy Sabourin helped present long-time volunteer David Hall with a Community Builder Award.

The room was instantly filled with warmth and appreciation as the other club members acknowledged David’s extraordinary efforts over the last 60 years to devote his time and energy to serving others.

Even after decades of volunteerism, David still goes above and beyond to empower youth and uplifts those in need.

His hard work and dedication inspire others to build stronger, healthier and inclusive communities for everyone. In the world of volunteering, there are few figures as steadfast and committed as David.

David Hall has supported his community, focusing on youth empowerment, for more than 60 years. His journey in volunteerism began with the YMCA’s Men International Movement, where he quickly became an active member and has remained so to this day. Through his various positions and influential roles, David has been a driving force in shaping the organization’s trajectory.

His diverse professional background includes roles such as church camp director, science magazine coordinator, farm manager and high school teacher. David now serves as a treasurer across three levels of the Y’s Men International movement.

Whether organizing educational outings for youth with disabilities or spearheading youth retreat programs like “Peace Action,” David has been instrumental in nurturing the next generation of leaders within the Ottawa area.

David’s advocacy, however, extends beyond his passion for youth empowerment. He also shows his dedication to the community by supporting new immigrants in Canada, supporting women and children fleeing violence and providing aid to those experiencing homelessness.

Over the years, David has remained passionate and humble about his work as he continues to mentor future leaders and champion causes close to his heart. Even as he approaches his seventh decade of volunteerism, David shows no signs of slowing down. He is the prime example of a community builder, someone who goes above and beyond to make the community a better place for all.
