Local comic Scott Yarwood (pictured above) produces LAUGH RIOT: Comedy Nite with Scott & Friends, the “weirdest comedy show in the 613” that takes place monthly at House of TARG.
And just as TARG is “a bunch of things at once”—venue, arcade, perogies and more—Yarwood aims to reflect the quirky combination in his monthly revue.
“TARG is a weird, collaborative venue and it’s a weird, collaborative comedy show,” says Yarwood. “I like having the freedom for comics to play around with ideas that they might only ever do once.”
In addition to tried-and-true comedians, Yarwood also wants to add an extra dimension that allows for performers to try different characters, play music as a part of their set, or even endeavour a little bit of improv. All the while continuing to make the experience inclusive to folks who might favour traditional stand-up.
“I think the beauty of independent comedy is the weird stuff that you won’t see on a special—and a reason to get out of the house! Our show also has some of the best comics in Ottawa, so not only is it weird but it also functions as a stand-up show,” Yarwood says.
“Even if some of the audience is just coming for regular stand-up, I want them to come out satisfied at the same time as those wanting something weirder and quirkier.”
You can hear more about the show through Curiocity, my weekly CKCU 93.1 FM program navigating city sights through community sounds—including conversations, local music and much more.
Last but not least: check out some shots from the most recent LAUGH RIOT (June 21) above—and mark your calendars to get weird at the next one, taking place on Wednesday, August 9 at the one and only House of TARG!
