August’s Awesome Ottawa award goes to Letitia Charbonneau for a climate action mural project by seniors and youth.

“The mural,” explains Letitia, “will commemorate the first National Seniors for Climate Day. Over 50 events will be taking place across Canada, and the mural will bring attention to the urgency of dealing with climate change.”

The mural will be designed and produced by seniors and youth working with Claudia Salguero, a well-known local muralist. A collaborative project, will be “a marvellous opportunity for dialogue,” says Letitia. She hopes to produce a video of the process.

Letitia is a convener for Seniors for Climate Action Now—Ottawa, and a retired middle school teacher.

Awesome Ottawa is part of a global movement of self-organizing chapters forwarding the interest of awesome in the universe, $1,000 at a time. At each chapter, ten or so “trustees” each contribute $100 monthly and review short applications received online to decide on the recipient of the pooled funds—usually a local project, but occasionally a particularly awesome one far away from home. Globally, close to $7 million has already been awarded–$180,000 of that by Awesome Ottawa. For more information, visit awesomeottawa.ca.
