Announcing the Apartment613 Paper Kindle Club

By Katie Marsh on March 27, 2012

Remember books? Sometimes known as Kindles that you don’t need to plug in, those nice paper objects were useful for filling up bookcases and, as an added bonus, sometimes contained useful information or great works of art.

In partnership with Collected Works, Hintonburg’s favorite independent bookstore, we’re launching a club to celebrate books and the people who love them. Our focus will be on local authors, both fiction and non-fiction. We’re hoping to get the discussion going both in person and online about the best of Ottawa’s literary scene, combining the best of the written word with the awesome powers of the interweb.

The first book we’ll feature is the latest work by Ottawa literary heavyweight Elizabeth Hay, Alone in the Classroom, which has been called Hay’s “most intricate, compelling, and seductive novel yet.” Set in Saskatchewan and in the Ottawa Valley, the story “probes the roots of obsessive love and hate, how the hurts and desires of childhood persist and are passed on, as if in the blood.”

There are two ways to take part in the fun:

Show up in person: The book club is taking place on April 29, 2012 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at Collected Works (1242 Wellington). If you want to add your witty and trenchant analysis in the discussion, reserve your spot on Eventbrite by clicking here (there is no cost to participate).

Participate online: We’ll also be live blogging the discussion, as well as reaching out to the Ottawa twitterati. Turn on your computer or smart phone on April 29 to add your two cents to the discussion.

Hope to see you there!
