For most people, the private lives of their favourite musicians remain mysterious and remote. Sure, we can see them rock out on stage, or read their ponderings on Twitter. But it’s not as easy to glimpse the personal spaces where they do their writing and recording.
That’s what makes local photographer Jamie Kronick’s photo series “The Songwriter” so fascinating. Between November 2010 and March 2011, 20 Ottawa-area musicians let Kronick, a recent graduate of the School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa, into their homes and studios. The collection of intimate, personal images that resulted got Kronick – who’s also the drummer for local indie rockers Paramedics – a 2011 Applied Arts Student Award. He’s one of a handful of local winners from both SPAO and Algonquin College chosen earlier this month for the North America-wide recognition.
The series illustrates Kronick’s great eye for detail – check out Maxim Cossette’s charmingly mismatched socks, for instance, or Sarah Hallman’s sparse-yet-cute bedroom. It also turns out both Alex R. Newman and Brendan Flynn have a thing for typewriters. Other local musicians featured in the project include Jim Bryson, Rolf Klausener, Adam Saikaley (pictured above) and Jill Zmud. Kronick’s work will – along with the rest of the winners – be showcased in the November/December issue of Applied Arts’ magazine, as well as at the winners’ exhibit in October at Toronto’s Wychwood Barns.
