The Red Trillium Studio Tour, running from May 31 to June 1, offers art lovers the chance to slow down, to get away from high-rises and traffic, and visit rural Ottawa artists in their own spaces. I spoke with local artist, Jennifer Ajersch, about the event, which has been ongoing for 27 years.
“The [Red Trillium] Studio Tour takes place every spring and fall,” Ajersch says. “This spring we have 12 different studios and 25 artists [creating in] a variety of different mediums.”
From pottery to painting, stained glass to wood burning, there is something for every magpie of the arts to enjoy. There will even be a glass blowing demonstration.

“We’ve got artists coming out of all the nooks and crannies of West Carleton,” Ajersch says. “It’s a chance for them to showcase their work, and also West Carleton. The scenery is beautiful, and little towns throughout are really beautiful as well.”
“If people wanted to make a day of it; it really would be a great way to capture the spirit of [the art] with visiting the cafes and seeing the scenery in the back roads… [to see the] environment these artists live in, that inspires them and gives them a lifestyle that lets them be so creative.”

This is the third year Ajersch has participated in the tour as a studio artist. Before that, she attended as a visitor. She invites everyone to get outside for it. “Seeing [art] in person, seeing where it’s made and having the opportunity to talk to the artists who make it really is a rich experience, more so than looking at anything online.”
