On Thursday, May 29, the Ottawa Art Gallery will host its signature Give to Get Art Auction at the Alma Duncan Salon on level three of the gallery.
The annual Give to Get Art Auction raises critical funds to support the Ottawa Art Gallery’s free exhibitions, education, community, and wellbeing programs, as well as artist opportunities. It aims to fuel the careers of Ottawa-Gatineau emerging artists and arts professionals while keeping art accessible for all.
In preparation for the event, the gallery’s panel has handpicked four standout pieces from more than 100 works that are set to shine this year for their annual Critic’s Choice feature. The Critic’s Choice feature highlights the quality of the works available at the auction.
This year’s jury members were Bill Staubi, Andy Akangah, and Jonathan Hobin.
- Bill Staubi, an art collector since 1978, has recently donated works to the Ottawa Art Gallery now featured in the Grotto special exhibition.
- Andy Akangah is a self-taught illustrator and creative director, and the founder and CEO of AKARTS Comics.
- Jonathan Hobin is an award-winning photo-based artist and the Creative Director of the SPAO Photographic Arts Centre.
During the selection process, jury members chose works that “felt significant, both in message and execution,” notes the Ottawa Art Gallery:
“As the jury moved through the show, they shared which works stood out—many felt significant, both in message and execution. They were especially drawn to pieces that showcase mastered techniques, from historical methods to inventive approaches. The group also noted that some works address contemporary concerns with beauty, meaning, emotional depth, and impact, while others stood out for their quiet genius and subtle, delicate details—hinting at cycles, hidden narratives, and tension. Intentionally blurred figures, reclaimed materials, and unconventional choices add to a sense of art wanting to piece the world back together.”
