March has begun and with it the event season begins to rev back up. People will start to release albums in the coming months, there will be garage sales galore, and everyone’s mood improves. There’s plenty of comedy, art and music coming up this weekend to kick off some March madness!

Start things off by listening to awesome people candidly talk about one of their biggest professional failures with this new monthly event, now in it’s 3rd edition: Fuck Up Nights Ottawa.

On Friday, Saw Gallery has By Any Means: DIY Animation curated by Emily Pelstring and Lesley Marshall. This show compiles the work of female animators and explores a wide variety of topics and emotions. Check out their teaser video here. GRINDR: Comedy at the Daily Grind celebrate their 1 year anniversary and feature Travis Maplesden and Greg Houston headlining the show. Also CONjure: An intimate evening of Magic, Comedy and Cabaret is on at the Avalon Studio. Enter the magicians parlour to be captivated and entertained by Zach Counsil and Steven Lafond. Afterwards enjoy free lessons on Magic and a Burlesque show.

Music wise, Afro-Cuban Night is happening at the NAC. Explore afro-cuban music through different genres, featuring Miguel de Armas, an Ottawa based Cuban pianist performing with his Latin Jazz Quartet. Rich Aucoin, HIGHS and Bucko play Friday night at Ritual for a mix of indie, electronic and some experimental music.

Saturday during the day Twiss & Weber have The Saucey Miliner trunk show displaying and taking measurements for her custom hats. Saucy Miliner Kelly Dunlap uses the finest materials and decorative treasures found from around the world to create you a unique piece to add to your personal style.

Saturday night, Elliot Brood and the Wilderness of Manitoba take the stage at Ritual. These two groups of trios are reminiscent of travel and exploration. While Elliot Brood incorporates a lot of banjo and acoustic guitar sounds the Wilderness of Manitoba have more folky undertones bringing Fleetwood Mac era synthesizers, prominent backbeat and electric guitar. Mugshots has FRYQUENCY, their pay-what-you-can event featuring The Acorn, Luka and DJ Gina Vinelli. This event is held monthly and hosts some of the best emerging Canadian music. Pressed is hosting Waxing Moon, Casa Legarto and Peter Mick. The groups have a little bit of everything; folky duets reminiscent of Johnny and June, some fun surf rock topped off with a little bit of acoustic folk.

On Sunday afternoon, Lone Star will be hosting a half-day psychic event with special guest Michael Stapley. Looking to connect with loved ones? Join this unique Q&A with the psychic to reach out to those you’ve lost. Zen For You is holding Cooking. Yoga. Meditation. a workshop on healthy cooking mixed in with some light yoga and heart chakra meditation.

Later on, Pressed is hosting SHElarious: A night of female comics. Celebrate International Women’s Day with a lineup of hilarious local ladies. The event is pay-what-you-can and has music, comedy and more!

C’est ce weekend qu’on avance l’heure!! Apparemment, le printemps est à nos portes. Joie ! Nous rêvons déjà au millier de tulipes qui recouvreront dans quelques mois les espaces verts de la ville. Pour l’instant on doit continuer à vivre et pour se préparer au changement, pourquoi ne pas s’imbiber des fraîcheurs culturelles.

Art Battle #234 ce vendredi 6 mars dès 19h
Douze artistes locaux se livreront à un combat épique à la Cour des Arts. Il s’agit d’un événement qui procède par éliminations et où les plasticiens disposent de vingt minutes par round pour croiser le fer et produire une oeuvre en direct. Cet événement unique est organisé dans plusieurs villes canadiennes, le gagnant obtiendra son laissez-passer au championnat national qui aura lieu durant l’été.

C’est le Ritual folk ce samedi 7 mars au Ritual Night Club
Le groupe torontois Elliott BROOD offrira du son folk-roots attachant. Il partagera la scène avec The Wilderness of Manitoba, un autre band issu de la ville reine.

Festival DiverCiné du 7 au 15 mars
L’Institut Canadien du Film présente la 13ème édition du Festival DiverCiné à Ottawa. DiverCiné présente fièrement des films qui mettent en lumière la francophonie mondiale : une dizaine de long-métrages seront présentés au légendaire Cinema ByTowne.  La liste des films est éloquente. De grandes œuvres y seront présentées.

Le retour de Chariots of the Gods  :: du métal bien local!
Avec deux albums à leur actif Reverence (2010) et Tides of War (2013), une tournée à travers le Québec et même une série de concerts à Cuba, le sympathique quintette Chariots of the Gods est de retour sur scène avec un nouveau lead singer et drummer. Ils mettent en valeur du death metal mélodique avec des éléments de trash et de metalcore. Ils performeront au Petit Chicago le samedi 7 mars. Un réveil qui s’annonce fracassant!
