This weekend is heavy with Friday events, with your pick of the mix from music to art and theatre filling the days and nights around it. Make sure to get in on some Robbie Burns celebrations this weekend honouring the famed Scottish poet and lyricist. Typical celebrations include whiskey tastings, indulging in some Scottish cuisine and readings of his most famous poems. And of course, another installment of Nature Nocturne, celebrating the Lunar Year Year with Chinatown Remixed.
Tonight, the Ottawa Art Gallery opens a collection of exhibits running until May 24. The exhibitions include work from Andrew Wright and Jon Saski with the full schedule breakdown on their Facebook page.
Friday and Sunday nights, Swizzles is having Karaoke for the LGBTQ and S communities. Friday night is The Lookout’s “Gentlemen of the Other Kind” event, a bi-monthly drag show for our city’s new drag kings and queens to perform alongside its veterans in this highly entertaining show. This one doubles as a fundraiser for DJ Kitty after her recent house fire.
The Strain play this Friday at Blacksheep Inn, with Forest Frontier and Mystic Road. Those looking for more of an Indie rock/pop sounds should check out Zaphods Friday for Frontier Ruckus, Weird With Cats, and Lights in August.
Finish What You Started brings the premiere of James Watt’s film Who Are You Mr. Node? and Ottawa’s finest punk from, Durs Coeurs and No Negative will be playing afterwards.
Arts Court has a Friday performance of Light, a theatrical event incorporating a live performer with sound and video technology. “Through live performance, original electronic music, and video, audiences are invited to experience the world through the eyes of a woman who wants more than anything to be light.” the synopsis reads, and the performance should be both emotionally and visually moving.
Saturday, The Scottish and Irish Store is having a Robbie Burns Dinner. There will be a whiskey tasting and highland dancing performance. And of course, haggis. You can review the menu on their website so there are no surprises, but a vegetarian option is also available.
Saturday has The Fays, a folk/punk band playing Atomic Rooster with Halifax rap master Jesse Dangerously. This is a free show, so make sure to drop in and enjoy the music! The Fays are soon to release War Tower through 613 Records in April, so stay tuned to their Facebook for more.
Finally, if you feel your lazy Sunday is a bit too lazy then check out The Hintonburg Public House for their Checkers Club from 2-5pm. You can BYOB (Bring Your Own Board) or use one of theirs. Those needing a refresher on the weekly Sunday night events should also try Babylon’s Mod Club spinning the best of the 80s, House of Targ’s Toughen Up a full night of vinyl and pinball, and The Mayfair always has something good on deck.

La Ville de Gatineau, par l’entremise du volet culturel Vivez l’Expérience, nous propose régulièrement des concerts de qualité. En voici deux à ne pas manquer ce weekend!
Arthur H et Ludovic Alarie à la salle Jean-Despréz et The Seasons à La Basoche
La salle Jean-Despréz accueillera vendredi soir l’auteur compositeur français Arthur H, qui sera en ville pour nous présenter son dernier disque « Soleil dedans ». Un album très planant, à découvrir. En première partie vous aurez l’occasion d’entendre Ludovic Alarie, un artiste de la relève originaire de Montréal. Bref, une soirée qui promet de procurer bien du plaisir.
Comme si la soirée du vendredi ne nous en offrait pas suffisamment, Vivez l’expérience nous propose un concert tout aussi enlevant pour le samedi! The Seasons, band originaire de la ville de Québec, sera de passage ce samedi à l’intimiste Cabaret La Basoche. Ce jeune quatuor offre du bon indie-folk-pop en anglais, et un son très mature. Très impressionnant. À voir absolument!
Pourquoi ne pas célébrer l’hiver avec Snowday
Samedi soir, le Mercury Lounge sera l’hôte d’un concert féérique du duo Torontois Snowday. Ils seront de passage en ville pour nous présenter leur plus récent album « As we Travel » . Ce groupe propose de la musique ambiante qui se décrit généralement par l’expression « chillout electronic ». Cette soirée présentera également un groupe local, le duo Fire Coast Acid Club.
Arts visuels : Des expositions en mode réflexion
Depuis le 17 janvier dernier, le Centre d’artistes Voix Visuelle présente Révélations anticipées de l’artiste Janie Julien-Fort. Une installation bien ficelée qui arbore des photographies abstraites et figuratives rassemblées sous forme de constellations! Un mélange d’images qui rappelle la photographie ancienne, mais aborde des sujets très contemporains. Un concept délibérément choisi par l’artiste pour représenter le discours fataliste des scientifiques et des groupes environnementaux afin de « créer un espace imaginaire où le spectateur a l’impression de contempler au futur son présent, telle une vision prémonitoire ». Votre fragilité en sera ébranlée. L’exposition sera présentée jusqu’au 7 février. Le Centre est situé au 67, avenue Beechwood (2e étage) à Vanier et est ouvert de 11h à 16h, du mardi au samedi.
Ce jeudi 22 janvier aura lieu le vernissage exclusif de La beauté au cœur des histoires : les Congolaises prennent la parole présenté par Julienne Lusenge, fondatrice et directrice du Fonds pour les congolaises (FFC), reconnue comme activiste intrépide du mouvement des femmes congolaises. L’exposition présente l’histoire de militantes qui se sont mobilisées pour lutter contre les obstacles qui entravent l’élimination du viol, obtenir justice et rétablir la paix en République démocratique du Congo (RDC). Notez bien : La totalité des fonds recueillis lors de cet événement sera versée à la FFC et servira à financer les organisations œuvrant pour l’avancement des droits des femmes et des filles en RDC. Le vernissage aura lieu de 17 h à 19 h à la Galerie SAW.
