Weekend roundup: What to do in Ottawa

By Apartment613 on April 4, 2013

Time for another weekend o’ fun, Ottawa – will it be full of fruit trees, detox, or a cappella music?

Want to celebrate with some musicians? There are a couple of release parties happening: Rimbombante will mark their latest latin/jazz/pop album at TAN Roasters Cafe in Sandy Hill Friday night. Pick a Piper (made up of members of the band Caribou) are in town on their LP release tour, and will have a few locals stopping by to play at their Pressed show on Sunday. Also that evening, the six-piece R&B group Harmony & Groove will party it up for their new album at the Mercury Lounge.

If you’re avidly anti-pop music, be at the Atomic Rooster on Saturday. Pop music will also be in short supply as Fuzz, Dagger Eyes & Neck take over the Dominion Tavern. Ruth Moody, a founding member of the Wailin’ Jennys, will be out at the Branch for a show on Friday evening. Also? If you’ve never seen The SoulJazz Orchestra, it’s worth the trip over the bridge to Le Petit Chicago on Saturday.

Down at Raw Sugar on Friday night check out Gianna Lauren + Language Arts (Saturday, it’s Punk + Funk night with Stars on Vinyl – always an epic dance party!) Across town in the Market, you’ll find a relocated Tropikalo dance party. It’s also Partyy. time at The Daily Grind, a glittery night of fancy clothes and photography.

If you like a little DJ-ing to go with some tasty fare, Whalesbone is having their first Funk Friday tomorrow night. Spins and oysters – how can you go wrong?

For theatre goers, we’ve got a parody of last year’s hottest book, and the GCTC is holding a fundraiser with several performances of MERZ.

If you’re a sewer or a crafter or just love fabric, EcoEquitable’s Fill-a-Bag fabric sale is where you want to be on Saturday morning. You can find inspiration for your own projects or purchase a few crafty delights at the Originals spring craft sale, happening at the Convention Centre all weekend long.

And lastly, wrap up your weekend with the 8th Annual Community Record Show and Beer ‘n’ Board Games at the Hintonburg Public House on Sunday.

What else will you get up to this weekend, Ottawa? Let us know below!
