It’s back! Support Local is turning 5 this year, and we’ve cooked up all sorts of exciting events for Ottawans to come together and show how this city is Heart City.
Since Support Local month first started in 2011, it’s been all about fostering collaborations between shops, artists, musicians, restaurants and more. This goal has been embraced across sectors, and we see creative collaborations popping up all over the city on a regular basis.
This year, Support Local is encouraging collaborations around growing our community: eating, harvesting, and celebrating local food. We’ve got a great lineup of events that showcase local food initiatives and the abundance of local farms, encouraging all of us to get out and collaborate as a community. There’s a community cooking night, a zine party with birthday cake, a pinball tournament and perogie party, a pop-up dinner at a brewery, the annual bicycle Plaid Parade, and much more. We’ll also have seeds on site at a few of the Support Local events – pick up a packet of local seeds and start thinking about next year’s garden (it’s never too early!).
Our theme, ‘This is Heart City: Passion grows here” aims to capture the creative and growing spirit we see every day in this fine town. We’re kicking things off tonight at a launch party down at House of Common on Fairmont Ave – stop by after 7pm to join us in celebrating five years of Support Local! And be sure to check out our full list of events going on in October and all of the participants over here, too.
So let’s eat together and grow this city together. Let’s plant seeds and feed our communities. Let’s be neighbours and support local.
This is Heart City.
