Ottawa’s Loon Choir is a 7 piece indie-rock/art-pop band that specializes in sweeping melodies and rushing crescendos. They’ve been producing their warm, harmonious sounds since early 2009, and worked with The Acorn’s Rolf Klausner and Obijou’s James Bunton on their first album, Expansion Forces.

Their second album, Fire Poems, was released in May. With Bunton again taking the lead on production, Loon Choir recorded the album over a nine-month period in Lincoln County Social Club in Toronto.

We contacted Loon Choir (over Facebook of all things) and got them to answer some questions.

How would you describe your sound?

A unique blend of art rock and indie pop, with a heavy emphasis on poetic lyrics. We try to sound un-like any other band—upbeat and poppy, catchy hooks with dark undertones and a general sense of urgency.

How did the act start?

The band began to take shape in late 2008 when long time songwriting partners Derek Atkinson and Brad Sheffield started rounding up friends and repliers to internet ads. All we knew was that we wanted lots of people to play out the layers we had in our heads. Nicole Yates was part of a 3 piece electro-country with Derek and Brad prior to Loon Choir, Jamie Leclair was a roommate who we taught bass too, Dan Larmour, Julien Jacobi and Kathleen Cauley were all picked up off ads we have placed for guitar, drums and violin.

How was your Bluesfest performance?

Our Bluesfest show went exceptionally well. We brought our trademark energy, our loyal fans and we were incredibly tight, mainly due to playing 9 shows in 8 days leading up to the festival on an Ontario tour in support of our new record Fire Poems.

How do you take your coffee?

With beer, hold the coffee 🙂
