The City of Ottawa presented its draft budget for 2011 last Wednesday. It held little in terms of surprises; tax hikes were set at 2.45%, respecting Jim Watson’s pledge of no more than 2.5% in total tax increase a year. Draft budget documents are available for review on the City’s website.

Library and Archives is usually a pretty calm and quiet place but it wasn’t so last Tuesday when a series of threats canceled the much publicized screening of Iranium. After pressure from Heritage Minister James Moore, the library has agreed to screen the film again on Sunday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.

Good news shoppers! Popular Québec chain Simons may be coming to Ottawa. According to OpenFile’s Nick Taylor-Vaisey, Simons has been working on getting an Ottawa location for the last 3-4 years. Potential locations include St. Laurent Shopping Centre but other options are being looked at.

Finally, Stephen Harper celebrated his fifth anniversary as Prime Minister of Canada yesterday. In a speech in front of hundreds in Ottawa on Sunday, the PM said Canada was more united, stronger and safer under his watch. One thing’s for certain, it has changed the policy direction of the country whether we like it or not.
