The Odawa Native Friendship Centre’s newest program is called Kizhaay Anishinaabe Niin (“I am a kind man”), and is geared toward bringing Indigenous men together to work against all forms of violence against Indigenous women.
The play is created and directed by Jessica Ruano. It has nothing to do with Ghomeshi’s trial or case, but rather with the aftermath and with the influx of individuals sharing their stories about rape and how the justice system has utterly failed them.
As an artist interested in these questions, when I saw Jessica Ruano’s first posts about The Ghomeshi Effect I felt relieved: I wasn’t the only one thinking about this and trying to make something of it.
This week on the show, we talk to creator/director Jessica Ruano and actor Leah Archambault from The Ghomeshi Effect, a new verbatim dance-theatre piece premiering January 19th at The Gladstone Theatre.
