When Lindsay Schindler celebrated her birthday this past October, she wasn’t expecting that one of her gifts would be finding out the band she’s part of had been nominated for a Canadian Folk Music award. Now, Lindsay and band members Tara Dunphy, Andrew Kosty, Kenneth Palmer, and Myke Phillips are making their way to Ottawa’s own Red Bird for a celebratory performance on Aug. 10.
The Canadian Folk Music Awards have officially started! This year’s event takes place from April 3-6 at the National Arts Centre and the Canadian Museum of History. Apt613 sat down with Graham Lindsey, board president of the CFMAs, to talk about the awards and the folk music scene in Canada right now.
Before becoming an award-winning artist, Mia Kelly was a teen in musical theatre productions of Oliver Twist, Anne of Green Gables, Cats and other classics. And before that, an “overly energetic seven-year-old.” On April 3, Kelly will be back home in Gatineau for the CFMAs, where she is nominated for Best Single of the Year for her song “Meaning Well.”
Ian Tamblyn of Chelsea, Québec, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada “for his enduring contributions as a folk music icon, adventurer and cultural ambassador for Canada.”
