When the 2014-15 National Arts Centre dance season was first announced a few shows caught the attention of Apartment613. Among those on top of the list is the upcoming performance this week by Le Patin Libre, a five-member collective of performers who specialize in contemporary skating.
But what is the difference between this show and traditional ice competitions? Well, think of the contrast between break dancing and ballroom contests. In other words, unlike stereotypical ice performances, which often have frizzy costumes and healthy doses of glamour, Le Patin Libre is pushing the boundaries of ice skating by combining complex artistry with urban street dance. While we all survive this brutal winter — can someone please tell Mother Nature that it doesn’t have to be this cold! — at least we can warm up our souls with this innovative and original show.
Le Patin Libre perform this Friday and Saturday at the Minto Skating Centre (2571 Lancaster Road). Tickets start at $30.
