With its official launch on June 6, Signing Off for the Summer will arrive right on time to be devoured by summer romance lovers. It’s a light, breezy novel with a believable premise, a likeable heroine, and lovely descriptions… It also has a super hot love interest, the guy next door.

I met with local author, Alyssa Delle Palme, to discuss her newest book and its roots in Ontario cottage country.

“It’s a romance novel about an overwhelmed radio journalist who leaves a toxic workplace, a bad relationship, and her controlling parents,” Delle Palme says, “and she escapes to her grandmother’s cottage on Cedar Lake for the summer. There she finds healing and solace, and she rediscovers her voice and the magic of falling in love.”

Cedar Lake is modelled after Pike Lake near Perth. “I have been going to my grandmother’s cottage since I was in diapers,” Delle Palme admits. “I know that setting in my bones, and it’s my favourite place in the whole world.”

Using this backdrop, Delle Palme asks readers to consider what it means to find oneself, to find one’s voice.

“What I want readers to take away is that you have a voice, and it’s okay to use it. Sometimes we lose that voice, and there is a quiet power or quiet strength in finding it again.”

“We touch on these harder themes,” she says, “but [Signing Off for the Summer] is a summer romance novel, with sunsets and skinny dipping, and campfires, and all of those wonderful summer themes as well.”

“It was one of those perfect summer evenings where the setting sun hit the leaves on the trees, so they flickered in the breeze like candlelight.” — Excerpt from Signing Off for the Summer

“I think it’s so beautiful at sunrise and sunset. It’s like Nature’s gift, this beautiful painting, and it’s never going to look the same as that. So, every sunrise and sunset is an adventure.”

Her love of dawn and dusk appear prominently in her creative life as well. “I write in the morning. It’s just the best way to start my day.”

Get ready for fireflies and butterflies, among the trees and in your tummy.
