How was your Easter weekend? Good? Good! We took a break last week but we’re back with a basket of fresh picks just for you!
“Hurt You” by Emma Gabriel
On this eclectic mix of 2000s and modern-day R&B, Emma Gabriel asks the age-old question: should I walk away from a lover that’s not good for me? The answer is always yes but Gabriel’s persona finds it very hard to let go. Her love trials are really fun to listen to though (no offence) as they’re accompanied by resonant vocals, memorable lyrics and a contagious rhythm.
“Only Love in My Heart” by Gentle Sparrow
Gentle Sparrow stays true to his name on this very gentle folk tune. This record is both a plea and a prayer advising us to lead with love and take ownership of our choices in life. Basically, ‘to thine ownself be true’. For a soft soothing reminder that there are good people in the world, play this song. “Only Love in My Heart” is one of five tracks on Gentle Sparrow’s debut EP which is out now.
“Outlaw Lover” by Lynne Hanson
Picture this: you’re in a Western saloon (like the one Cowboy Carter hangs out in), the doors blow open and the most notorious ne’er-do-well walks in. It’s impossible to ignore or forget her since she’s broken the hearts of anyone unlucky enough to cross her path – that’s Outlaw Lover. This understated blend of blues and country made me feel like the main character of this story. And that electric guitar solo? Chef’s kiss.
“Mercury Ascendant” by Oddeline
Heavily inspired by Bob Dylan, Mercury Ascendant is a stream-of-consciousness tale about a mysterious muse whose arrival changes everything. Jazz-infused folk rhythms, delicate harmonies, finger-picked guitar, and vintage vocals make this record a mystical experience.
