Marvest is an offshoot of the CityFolk festival that runs between September 16th and 20th, at the Aberdeen Pavilion, and along Bank Street. These mostly free shows feature local bands, and we’ll be profiling some of those bands.
Dynamic alternative-rock and shoegaze group Tindervox will be part of the Marvest shows at City Folk this month. Formed 5 years ago by Ottawa friends and co-workers Kara Askwith (vocals/guitar), Justin Black (baritone guitar/guitar), Benoit L’Ecuyer (bass), and Tiff Robson (drums), the group would rehearse after opening hours in the basement of their workplace, eventually leading to their self-titled debut in 2014. Currently working on new material, Tindervox anticipates their sophomore release some time in 2016.
With Ottawa’s already busy festival calendar, we asked Tindervox guitarist Justin Black what niche he thought the (technically) new CityFolk Festival might be filling. In response Black said “I don’t know much about how a new festival will fill a certain niche, I’ll leave that to Mark Monahan and everyone working at CityFolk/Bluesfest. I’m grateful that they open their festivals up to the local musicians and give them the opportunity to play, and I’m also excited to see the great acts they have lined up.” More concerned with how noise complaints may affect Ottawa’s music community, Black added “The only “Nietzsche” we should be focused on here is the one that said, “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”. That should be distributed on pamphlets around the area, for those with the noise bylaw on speed dial.”
When asked about the band’s live show and whether they had any worries about Marvest shows taking place in some non-traditional venues, Black said “I’m going to keep my fingers on my instrument and my eyes on my toes, If I can keep wiggling all those fingers and toes, I got nothing to worry about,” adding “I think if you make it to any place with live music, grab a drink, and play your cards right, anything is possible.”
Excited about all the music CityFolk has to offer, Black hopes people will come out and just have a good time saying “Enjoy the festival! Keep your eyes up, your ears on the side of your head, and your phone in your pocket. You’ll do fine! Left-foot, right-foot (preferably towards some music) Smile and have the best time you didn’t know you could even have.”
