Gratuitous, grotesque, guts. What more to expect as GWAR’s “Age of Befuddlement” Tour descended upon Ottawa with chaotic energy that left the audience both thrilled and bewildered? The show included a multitude of alien and monster costumes, outlandish props and spurting fake blood, as fans dressed in all-white entered the sold-out Bronson Centre, prepared to be immersed in the evening.
The American band’s signature blend of thrash metal and theatrical performance art created an unforgettable spectacle that attacked the senses. The setlist was a relentless onslaught of classics mixed with tracks from their latest album, each song accompanied by its own vignette of stage antics and audience interaction. Despite the band’s four-decade-long career, their performance was as fresh and ferocious as ever, proving that age has only added to their prowess as entertainers.
Providing support on the tour were Toronto’s own Cancer Bats, who were stoked to be back in Canada with their signature blend of hardcore and punk.
Opening the night were X-Cops, who are actually a side project of various members of GWAR and their extended team dressed as police and prisoners. Only GWAR could both open and close their own show.
