One of Ottawa’s favourite festivals kicked off last night, as thousands descended upon Cityfolk 2024 at Lansdowne. Headlining night one was The Beaches, moving up from the late show to the main show in recent years. From playing The 27 Club in 2017, to the Bronson Centre in 2019 and early 2020, to heading up the second stage at Bluesfest in 2022 and a number of other shows in between, this was their largest show in Ottawa to date. Lead vocalist/bassist Jordan Miller gave Ottawa fans their flowers, acknowledging that the capital was one of the early places where they realized as a band that their music was taking off.
Hawksley Workman was the sole artist in the tent stage on night one, drawing a large crowd with his quirky charm and large catalogue of music going back to 1998.
The twin duo of Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn otherwise known as Softcult brought their blend of grunge and shoegaze to the main stage. Opening the night was Päter, the Toronto pop rock artist backed by a full band who were lit up by the warm late summer sun.
