There’s a new event curator on the block, and it’s one you’ll want to pay attention to.

Exhibit One project curator Keke Doreus believes art is never a final product — it’s an ongoing process that is never fully complete.

This is exactly what she hopes to portray through her multidisciplinary art shows, the first of which took place on Aug. 16 at The Collaboration Centre Canada (TCC) at 150 Elgin St. The debut show, ÉPILOGUE, starred live art presentations including fashion, sculpture, and music.

Doreus says ÉPILOGUE is meant to act as a preview for future events.

“The goal of Exhibit One is to showcase art in a very unique way,” she says. “When it came to ÉPILOGUE, we wanted to give people an overview of what they can expect for our upcoming shows. But at the same time, it’s rooted in highlighting local artists.”

This desire to showcase local artists is a driving force and a source of inspiration for Doreus.

“Ottawa is such a beautiful city with so many talents in it, and I think we just need more people who are able to give artists that space to be themselves, and to showcase the amazing talents that they have, because they are all so unique in their own way and it’s a beautiful thing to witness,” she says.

For Doreus, this sense of inspiration is cyclical, and directly inspired ÉPILOGUE.

“When it comes to creating an art piece, it’s never something that is truly finished. The whole vision of ÉPILOGUE was to showcase art as a process, and never as a final result or product.”

Designers such as Neoritualism, Pearletta Designs, odeko, and Imihuey were showcased during the event, plus performances from Justine Sapezinskas, Raidah, Wyatthouse.co, Olivie Mae Sinclair, and Stay Wild Dance Studio.

The entire show showcased art works as works in progress, something Doreus says is not discussed enough in exhibition spaces.

“If someone goes to an exhibition, they don’t ever see the creative process behind it. They don’t know how much time that person took to create it. That’s what we want to showcase,” she says. “We also want visitors to not just look at [the art], but to just feel something about it. We want to create a feeling and not just art. It’s something to be experienced and not just seen.”

Even before the event occurred, Doreus told Apt613 that she was already thinking about the next show, which will lean more towards the fashion world.

“But again, the whole idea of Exhibit One is always blending all types of arts together for an immersive experience. It’s never just about one thing. It’s always about creating a unique experience every time.”

Exhibit One is a project dedicated to highlighting the talents of Canadian fashion designers and artists by presenting their work through dynamic exhibitions, various runway shows, and curated event displays.
