Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk has been together for four years, and in that short time they’ve managed win twelve Maple Blues Awards, a Blues Music Award in Memphis, a Canadian Independent Music Award, and a Juno for Best Blues Album. They’re probably one of the more decorated blues bands in Canada.

Fronted by the legendary Tony D, the band has had some sort of presence at Bluesfest for as long as I can remember. Tony D in particular is a veteran of the festival—he used to host “Hour of Power” (I believe that was the name), often several times throughout the festival. So it’s fitting that MonkeyJunk should play alongside Metric as one of the closers of the festival this Sunday. Like Metric, it just wouldn’t be Bluesfest without them.

We asked the venerable band to answer some questions.

How would you describe your sound?

Our sound could be described as contemporary blues-influenced soul boogie, bedroom funk and swamp rock.

How did the band start?

We started four years ago as an experiment on Sunday nights at Irene’s Pub . . .  looks like it worked out okay . . .

How was your Bluesfest performance?

You can expect a high energy show featuring songs from our latest record To Behold, our first record tiger in Your Tank and a few faves we have worked into our show.  There may be a guest or two.

Who is your favourite super hero?

Our favorite super hero is… a love child between Superman, Batman and Catwoman.

MonkeyJunk plays the Black Sheep Stage on Sunday July 15th at 9:15pm.
