Hey kids! If you’re anything like me you’re well aware that autumn is upon us (I can’t be the only one waking up at 2 A.M. suffering through the challenging eternal question: do you get out of bed to grab another blanket or hope your shivering body can just shake itself back to sleep?)
Despite this annual reality I sure do love the season. And I think it says a lot about this fine fine city in which we all live to realize that while the sap may stop flowing and the leaves may fall: there’s certainly no stopping the weekend excitement here in Ottawa!
CityFolk kicks things off early to get your weekend started. Whether you’re into the psychedelic folk vibe of Lee Harvey Osmond, the heartbreaking pared-down harmonies of Wilco or the classic sounds of Van Morrison, CityFolk appeals to, well, folks of all tastes. It’s going down now – Sunday September 20th at the Great Lawn of Lansdowne Park. Come on out to experience the new venue and a fantastically diverse line-up.
As if CityFolk isn’t already delivering a killer crew of performers they’re introducing a new initiative this year: Marvest! Taking over Aberdeen Pavillion and a long stretch of Bank Street this locally-focused sister-project to CityFolk features Ottawa artisans vendors, musicians and a stellar Craft Brew fair! Apt613 was invited to curate a night of local performances on Friday, September 18. We’re excited to present Moonfruits, Kelly Sloan and MATT dorgan PROJECT at the Original Burger Joint. The fun starts at 8pm.
On Saturday, the Writer’s Fest presents Power in the Blood: A Conversation with Buffy Sainte-Marie. The day before she finds out if she wins the 2015 Polaris Prize, she’ll be sitting with CBC Radio host Alan Neal to reflect on her 50 years of songwriting. This is sure to be an inspiring night.
In the mood for donning your art-lovers hat? Better grab a cup of joe from your favourite java joint because this Saturday you’ve got the chance to walk a few kilometres in your favourite paint-stained shoes.
Start your 26-hour foray into all things artistic at the annual Chinatown Remixed. From 2:00-8:00 p.m. visual, performance and musical artists are taking over Chinatown to show off the wide range of talent this city has to offer.
Then once the sun goes down you can keep your right-brain stimulated by hitting the streets at the third Ottawa+Gatineau Nuit Blanche. It’s a dusk-til-dawn event that literally puts art out into the streets. With a combination of events and exhibits on view at ArtsCourt, the Byward Market, Gatineau and some limited locations affectionately dubbed “outer place projects” this night promises to keep you wide awake even after the sun suddenly shows its face and you wonder “how the heck did it get to be 5 a.m. already?”
Don’t feel like dressing up to weather the elements? Keep it indoors but support taking-it-all-off. The Ottawa Burlesque Festival is returning tonight – the 20th at venues like Saw Gallery, the Gladstone Theatre and other supporters of all things cheeky (buns intended…okay okay I’ll stop now). A positive celebration of every body type and identity this is a fun and unintimidating environment that welcomes new friends and familiar faces.
Also indoors, a couple of parties tomake you dance. On Friday night, DJ Hobo and Sweet Cheeks celebrate Kitchen Party’s four year anniversary at Cafe Nostalgica with AA Wallace, Memetic and Hard Science. On Saturday, The Deep End, a monthly music venture combining art and sound launches its residency at Ritual Nightclub showcasing emerging and established DJs from the scenes of House, Techno, Minimal and more.

Difficile d’avoir les blues de l’été avec la chaude météo des derniers jours. Le weekend qui s’en vient veut nous faire oublier que la mi-septembre est déjà arrivée.
Du 16 au 20 septembre Ottawa vibrera au son de la musique folk. Le CityFolk nous présente un large éventail d’artistes provenant de divers horizons. Cette année le festival se transporte vers un nouveau site enchanteur, le parc Lansdowne. La programmation est belle et riche!
On s’intéresse au volet Marvest qui aura lieu dans le secteur Glebe à Ottawa. Ce nouveau festival en marge du CityFolk, présentera du 17 au 20 septembre, plus d’une soixantaine d’artiste de la région. Pensez à un artiste d’Ottawa-Gatineau et il y a 50 % de chance qu’il fasse partie du Marvest. Une belle occasion de découvrir des artistes d’ici qui font vivre la scène culturelle de la région tout au long de l’année. Fait intéressant, la grande majorité de ces spectacles sont gratuits.
Un évènement qui unit les deux rives, ça on aime ça! Ce samedi soir aura également lieu la traditionnelle Nuit Blanche Ottawa-Gatineau. La 4e édition de cet évènement vouée aux arts et à la culture propose des activités aux quatre coins d’Ottawa-Gatineau, de 19h19 à 4h20 du matin! Du 16 au 20 septembre, c’est le Festival international de film d’animation d’Ottawa. Il s’agit du plus important festival de film d’animation en Amérique du Nord! Ça existe depuis 1976! Au menu, on retrouve des projections spéciales et une rétrospective de l’oeuvre du très acclamé Bruce Bickford qui, dans les Années 70, s’occupait des animations vidéo de Frank Zappa. Jeudi et vendredi sera présenté Wondering Boy Poet ; il s’agit d’une rétrospective de ses oeuvres tels que Prometheus’ Garden, un court-métrage nommé « Meilleur court métrage de 1988 » par un influent critique de cinéma John Hartl du Seattle Times. Pour le reste du festival d’animation, sachez que si vous aimez les dessins animés classiques, les expériences fantastiques, les créations numériques, les effets spéciaux avant-gardistes, les feux d’artifice techniques, il y aura quelque chose pour vous!
Finalement, pour conclure le weekend en beauté, allez faire un tour dimanche soir aux Brasseurs du Temps à Hull pour voir Mononc’ Serge en concert. L’ancien bassiste des Colocs s’amène en ville pour nous présenter un spectacle en formule trio acoustique. Un spectacle qui promet de brasser.
