Weekly News Review: Patio rule relaxed, Freegal Music at OPL and lots more!

It looks like the city’s relaxing it rules when it comes to setting up patios. Under the existing bylaw, if a patio encroaches on city property and is within 30 metres of a residential building, the application is immediately denied with no recourse for the bar or restaurant owner to appeal the decision. Last week, the city accepted a patio request from the Fox and Feather and, perhaps more importantly, approved staff recommendations to change the policy that will allow applications like McLaren’s and Fox and the Feather’s to go forward.

Taking a step towards a digital future, the Ottawa Public Library has made available hundreds of thousands of songs, available for download through, Freegal Music. All songs on Freegal are part of the Sony Music catalogue. You just need a library account to start downloading.

About 1,000 people participated in the Ottawa SlutWalk on Sunday – an event inspired by the January 24 comments by a Toronto police officer who suggested that if women wanted to avoid being sexually assaulted, they shouldn’t dress like sluts. The event was meant to put the blame of rape on the perpetrator, not the victim. “No one asks for sexual assault,” said Ottawa organizer Emily Griffiths. “Never, ever is there any justification for unwanted sexual attention or contact by another human being.” The event stirred up a number of comments in our events section.

The Sens finished a disappointing season with a whimper, a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. Later in the week, they announced they’d resigned (oops!) re-signed GM Bryan Murray to a 3-year extension and let go coach Cory Clouston.
