The power of a film score is undeniable. Building fear, excitement, joy or sadness and elevating the impact of a story. Ottawa Pops Orchestra (OPO) brings us an entire concert dedicated to film composer Hans Zimmer, with The Music of Hans Zimmer. For two nights only (and one matinee) you can be enchanted by some of your favourite movie scores live!
Hans Zimmer is a legendary GRAMMY®, Golden Globe, and Academy Award® winner known for some of the most iconic scores in movie history. From The Dark Knight trilogy, Gladiator, Dune and Pirates of the Caribbean, the list of recognizable music is endless. Zimmer has become known for blending electronic music and sounds with more traditional orchestrations, that OPO tackles head on their performance.
Film and music buffs will not want to miss OPO’s first dedicated concert to Zimmer’s work. The musicians do beautifully at bringing the range of scores to life, along with the addition of electric guitar, bass, organ and innovative synthesizer elements to do the pieces justice. The program, which was co-curated by Trevor Wilson in collaboration with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, highlights a strong range of Zimmer’s work and is engaging from the first to last note. The inclusion of a choir and local Syrian vocalist Ghada Harb, are used to elevate the music and depth of the performance even further.

OPO continues to play an impactful role in the Ottawa arts and culture scene, with their focus on building programming that makes orchestral performances accessible to all audiences. We have continuously seen how they bring groups of all ages and backgrounds together at their productions and show that an orchestral concert doesn’t have to be expensive and stuffy. It is clear audiences have an appetite for more of this in Ottawa’s arts and culture scene, with just a small handful of tickets left for OPO’s run.
The Music of Hans Zimmer honours the value of movie scores and envelops audiences into the music on stage. If you can manage to nab one of the last few tickets you will be in for a musical treat!
Ottawa Pops Orchestra’s The Music of Hans Zimmer takes place Jan. 18 at 7:30pm and Jan. 19 at 7pm with a matinee performance at 2:30pm on Saturday. Tickets range from $38 – $65, with reduced prices available for under 30.
