Fresh off of six JUNO award nominations for 2023, Charlotte Cardin began the opening night of her North American leg of the 99 Nights tour. From midday shows on Canada Day, selling out the NAC’s Southam Hall twice, to headlining Bluesfest, to now two shows at TD Place, Cardin’s trajectory keeps on rising. The 29-year-old Montreal-born pop star’s influence in Canada has been remarkable. Charlotte led all artists in nominations at the JUNOs, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.

Having to cancel seven European tour dates just over a week before last night’s show due to illness, Charlotte’s vocal range was back to its usual best. Apparent in songs such as her hit “Meaningless” from 2021’s Album of the Year Phoenix, as well as the piano-driven ballad “Anyone Who Loves Me,” Cardin pulls you in with each note.

Opening the night was Toronto’s New West, the dynamic quartet from several musical backgrounds. The group was also nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year at this year’s JUNO awards. New West showed why they deserve it, as lead vocalist Kala Wita bounced from engaging with fans to tearing up the keys.

If you missed out on this sold-out show, you’re in luck as Charlotte Cardin returns on February 22 to TD Place for her second night in Ottawa.
