The City of Ottawa is beginning a multi-year process to develop a new Official Plan, which will provide a vision for its growth and a policy framework to guide its physical development. On October 17, 2019, the City’s Cultural Development and Initiatives section (CDI) hosted an open event called Defining Ottawa Together: Culture in the Official Plan aimed at defining and shaping the future of Ottawa through culture.
The four-hour public engagement session, which was live-streamed in its entirety on Apartment 613’s YouTube channel, included an international panel, a short video of interview highlights from a cross-section of Ottawa citizens, and opportunities for input through maps, ideas and words.
Five major themes were discussed:
- Indigenous places and significant spaces
- New immigrants gathering places and significant spaces
- Arts, heritage and culture hubs
- Natural areas, rural areas, parks and open spaces
- Culture online
Anyone unable to attend the event can watch the videos below and share insight through the City’s Engage Ottawa website. Until October 28, users can participate by:
- Upvoting ideas shared from the October 17 session (Ideas tab)
- Identifying key spaces and places according to the five themes (Places tab)
- Adding their own suggestions or building on existing ideas (Forum tab)
