In a digital broadcast tonight, May 7, Ottawa music industry leaders presented Wise Atangana, Céleste Lévis, DRAE, The Great Diversion, Marie-Clo, The PepTides, Tiagz, and TwoTiiime with the 2021 Capital Music Awards. Viewers of the free stream also got to see exclusive new performances from Céleste Lévis, The Commotions, Baëbe Ruth, LeFLOFRANCO, and JW-Jones.
Organized by the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition (OMIC) for the first time in 2020, the Capital Music Awards recognize artists and members of the community who contribute to Ottawa’s diverse music scene.
TwoTiime’s track “Hood Cry” dedicated to FTG Metro won the public vote for Single of the Year. The public vote for Video of the Year went to “Invaders” by The PepTides, and Virtual Performance of the Year to Céleste Lévis. All other awards from Artist to Album of the Year were determined by an independent jury.
While several artists were nominated in multiple categories (see the list of nominees here) it’s interesting to note that the jury did not select any artist to receive more than one award. OMIC’s jury was formed of 26 music professionals from across Ontario who reviewed more than 200 submissions. This was a new selection model for the Capital Music Awards, now in its second a year. For the inaugural awards in 2020, submissions got whittled down to a short list by jury, which then put the final decision to a private ballot of OMIC members.
The eligibility period for these awards is October 1, 2019 to March 31, 2021. Any Ottawa-Gatineau based artist can be nominated for the Capital Music Awards by a member in good standing of the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition.
