Weekend roundup: What to do in Ottawa

By Karen Diepeveen on August 14, 2014

The rain isn’t sticking around for long, so there’s no excuse for missing a mini maker fairea little treasures sale, a big wild challenge, or any of the other-sized events going on around town.

There are myriad ways to tickle your funny bone this weekend, with My Summer Crush Improv heading into their three weeks of all comedy, all the time. Opening night is Thursday, followed by evening and late night shows all weekend long. Laughs for Animals is also happening this weekend, raising money for the Ottawa Humane Society.

Pride is back for a week long celebration. This weekend, there’s a special edition of Nature Nocturne, a cabaret, dance parties, an incarceration BBQ, and even a tribute to Mean Girls. Be sure to check out their calendar to fill up your schedule for the entire upcoming week.

For you film buffs, Centretown Movies wraps up this weekend with a special Treepot Media shorts showcase, followed by Singing in the Rain. Out in Westboro, Cellar Door Film Festival hosts Night of the Living Dead at Lion’s Park on Friday night.

Head to City Hall to catch the National Capital Craft Beer Festival – there are over 100 different brews to try, so you might need to pace yourself or make some tough tasting decisions. Down at Brewer Park, it’s Savour Ottawa Harvest Table, with local chefs and farmers hosting a gourmet lunch.

In music, tonight we have Bob Log III with Hunter, Matt Morel and Catriona Station playing at Zaphod’s. Jordan John brings rhythm and blues to the Black Sheep on Friday, while What’s Wrong with Wolfie? releases their new album alongside Marc Vincent and CO3. Saturday, local favourites Fevers is at House of Targ with The Box Tiger and Those Gulls. Kelly Sloan wraps up the weekend at 8 Locks Flat with a late afternoon show on Sunday. And don’t forget: Arboretum Festival kicks off Monday and will fill up your entire week with awesomeness.
