Weekend Roundup: What to do in Ottawa

By Chris Cline on May 22, 2014

Though it’s still officially a few weeks off, if our events calendar is any indication, summer is already here! So you’ll want to take advantage of the warmer weather and get out to some great events, be they outdoor or indoor.

Board game lounges seem to be all the rage these days, and Ottawa’s newest – The Loft – will launch today, so start your weekend early with some Catan, Carcassonne or Pandemic.

On Friday, head out to the You’ve Changed Records 5th Anniversary Revue with Shotgun Jimmie, Weather Station, Baby Eagle and more. This one is a presentation of the folks at Arboretum. At around the same time, the Hens Night Bachelorette Party will be raising funds for a women-centric independent film being produced right here in Ottawa. You won’t want to miss the body painting, tickle trunk for dress up, and perhaps most intriguingly, the makeup and make out photo booth.

Alternately on Friday night, you could howl for the hounds at Shanghai with the Greyhound Supporters’ Karaoke Fundraiser and Silent Auction for retired racing greyhound adoption. Lots of awesome silent auction items are available for this one, including (hint hint!) Apt613 swag.

If you’re looking to dance, Tropikalo is back for more tropical summer jams on Friday at Mugshots. For those looking for something a bit less sunny to groove to, Death Disco will feature gothic and industrial music at Swizzles at around the same time.

Early risers will get the best deals on Saturday morning at the always anticipated Great Glebe Garage Sale. But save some cash to spend on the 80 vendors at the Ravenswing Arts & Music Fair on Sunday.

The folks behind Saturday’s Brewery Market are hoping that runners participating in the Ottawa Race Weekend will drop by to load up on carbs before the race kicks off. The verdict is still out on whether this is good advice for marathon participants.

Saturday evening will bring a host of music options, including the Spirit of Rasputin’s Concert that will revive the vibe of the city’s now-defunct folk music institution. Post-hardcore band Our Last Night will bring a very different vibe to Ritual the same evening.

If you need something a bit more chill for Sunday, head out to Shenkman Arts Centre for the Originals: New Shoots from Jazz Roots event, a unique concept showcasing original compositions from Jazzworks members and faculty.
