Weekend Roundup: Quoi faire ce weekend + Almonte Celtfest giveaway

By Jean McLernon on July 9, 2015

This weekend is the beginning of Ottawa Bluesfest, with local bands Blakdenim, Kaleigh Watts, Pony Girl and Silvergun and Spleen playing this weekend alone. Make sure to check out the epic local lineup around partaking in arguments about whether Kanye should be there or not. For those missing Bluesfest, there’s plenty to do over the weekend that doesn’t involve standing in line-ups or being herded through festival grounds.

You can help The Strain raise money for a new bus by attending the Bad Highschool Dance’s free cover show at Kaffe 1870 this Friday at 9pm. Its a pay-what-you-can donation event for the band to hit the road and bring our local music to Vancouver. Kitchen Party is happening at Rochester Pub – this will be the last shebang for the Pub as it’s closing post party for good. This monthly dance party has become a well loved gem, so check it out in its natural habitat before KP moves to a new venue.

Ottawa Makers Market starts Saturday at noon. This monthly event brings together local artisans and performers to showcase their work. DJ Skratch Bastid is in town and having a BBQ at TD Place Stadium. It all kicks off at 4pm and features performers like Thugli, Iggy Smalls and A Tribe Called Red’s Bear Witness. Pippahauntas,The Everywhere’s and Trails play Mugshots, an all ages show starting at 8pm.

Its also a big day for Roller Derby. If you haven’t had a chance to see this sport live, do not miss an opportunity this weekend. The Rideau Valley Roller Girls and Capital City Derby Dolls will be holding a Free Roller Derby Day from 1-4pm where both teams will be playing mini-scrimmages to showcase this incredible sport at Marion Dewar Plaza. Across town at Bernard-Grandmaitre for 6:30pm, Ottawa Roller Derby is having their Home Opener with the Bytown Blackhearts taking on the Killah Bees. The next morning Ottawa Roller Derby is holding their Black and White Scrimmage at 9:30am. Any skaters who have passed their minimum skills test and are insured are welcome to join for $5, and admission is free for spectators.

Also on Sunday, the Ottawa Humane Society is holding a Summer Harvest Garden Party. Top chefs and mixologists get together for this annual fundraiser to remember the late Chef Kurt Waldele, who was a passionate longtime supporter of the cause.  OSCA is holding a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Windsor Park from 3-5pm. Those looking for some laughs should check out Off The Rails Comedy at Live! on Elgin. And be sure to catch The CDs play the Rainbow Sunday night with the Seaside Villains.

Almonte Celtfest is happening all weekend and we’ve got two VIP passes to giveaway, which include backstage access. This 3 day festival celebrates the traditional Celtic music, song and dance of the Ottawa Valley. To enter, send an email with the subject header “Celtfest” to apartment613@gmail.com.
