The season’s wind down is upon us and the days are growing shorter. Thankfully for all, this holiday weekend is a day longer than typical and we can enjoy another late summer’s night.
A glorious long weekend is upon us and the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival is releasing countless hot air balloons into the sky to celebrate. In addition to the launch of some incredible hot air balloons – taking flight at both dawn and dusk, all weekend – there are musical performances, an arcade, an amusement park, an akropark, and more!
Those who appreciate a good beer (and a good cause): head to the Buck-A-Beer Launch at Dominion City this Thursday. Craft brewers have been vocal about their inability to produce quality beer with a dollar price tag, so Dominion City has decided to instead donate a buck from every Buck-A-Beer Blonde Ale sold to local settlement causes which aid refugees. Delices de Damas (Damascus Delights) will also be at the brewery, serving up Syrian pizza and falafel.
There is also a Trans Genre Art Exhibit happening at allsaints event space this Thursday. Five local artists “have developed critical, creative works that reconsider the popular representation of trans* folks and offer dynamic, expansive, and profound understandings of trans* identities and experiences”.
The Art House Café has a continuous exhibition structure, which allows local artists to submit their works for sale at any time. Each month, they hold a vernissage where folks have the opportunity to meet the artists behind Art House’s ever-changing collection. With August coming to a close, this month’s vernissage happens this Friday night. Joining the artists is Auchtorok, who will be providing some great beats, alongside video projections. Come out, meet the artists and perhaps take home a new piece for your collection!
Après le vernissage, why not take a short stroll down Somerset and find your way to Bar Robo for a 90s hip hop dance party? DJ Geoff Paquet will Bring The Beat Back with an all vinyl set of your favourite old school hits. If you think that the eve couldn’t get any better, get this: no cover!
Carnival season is in full swing, and if you can’t make the trip out to the Perth Fair this weekend, Little Jo Berry’s will bring the fair to you, with their final summer party: Carnival is my Favourite, OKAY?. They will be serving up all of your favourite vegan carnival treats from cheesecake on a stick to mini donut sundaes.
Bar Robo has launched a new series of intimate concerts, called Robo Artist Series, and the very first performance of the series takes place this Saturday. Flying Horses and Nathanael Larochette will take you away on a magical instrumental journey. There is also a great show by Rob Dickson and Merivale happening at Pressed.
Our city’s team may not be playing at TD Place this weekend, but our country’s women’s soccer team is! Come see our Canadian women’s soccer team take on Brazil, in their final game before the qualifying set for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Two of Ottawa’s favourite local breweries are hosting great food and drink events this Sunday. Beyond the Pale Brewery is hosting a Family Feast Day and Dominion City is serving up another round of Sunday Pintxos.
Then there is Iliac at Bar Robo. Spend the evening exploring sensuality through performance and interviews. A portion of the cost of entry will be donated to the Sexual Assault Support Centre Ottawa.
Monday is a holiday, so why not stay out late and celebrate? Black Squirrel Books is hosting Radiation Risks, DOXX, Wire Cuffs, and a mystery guest this Sunday. After the show, head on over to House of Targ and enjoy free pinball all evening long – all for the cost of the door to the show.
Spend the end of your long weekend at the baseball diamond with Fan Appreciation Day and the Ottawa Champions. Members of the Montreal Expos and Bill “Spaceman” Lee will be at the field and there will also be an autograph session at the game.
We will leave Monday mostly up to you to decide. Whether you sleep in late and lounge all day, or head out on the town, have fun! Take lots of pictures and hashtag them with #apt613. We’ll pick our favourites and post them on our feed.
