Weekend Roundup: Quoi faire ?

By Amanda Armstrong on April 26, 2018

With May just around the corner, the weather has warmed from the snow and ice of a few short weeks ago and we can finally pack away our winter jackets. Going outside has become a whole lot more hospitable – and just in time, as there is plenty to get out and do this weekend in Ottawa!

All Weekend

The Ottawa International Writers Festival, Spring Edition begins this Thursday and continues through the weekend. The festival features talks from a whole host of authors, in a variety of different genres, including science, history, poetry, and fiction. You can find a full list of the events here.

Cheese hounds, rejoice! The Sparks Street Poutinefest has returned, for yet another four night affair! With nearly 20 different food trucks, serving up some amazing variations of the tried and true favourite, you are sure to find something that will tantalize your taste buds.

This Thursday eve, enjoy a Night Brunch at the Bridgehead Roastery, in support of the Ottawa School Breakfast Program. Chefs Katie Ardington, of Beckta Group; Jess Fletcher, of Bridgehead Roastery; Adam Vettorel, of North & Navy; Rich Wilson, of The Pomeroy House; and Steve Harris, of two six {ate} will be serving an incredible 6 course meal, complete with beer pairings from Dominion City Brewing Company. This event sells out every year and there are only a few tickets left, so be sure to snag yourself one quick!

The Blooming Local Craft Market Night Market is happening this Friday at Makerspace North. 75 vendors – including Blondie Apparel, Top Shelf Preserves, Terra Velta, Threadwork, and Strut Jewelry – will be at the event. The market continues through the day Saturday and not all vendors will be there on both days, so have a look at the vendor list on their event page and plan your trip accordingly.

The Ottawa Art Gallery has been working hard to prepare their beautiful new space for Opening Weekend, this Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to take the opportunity to explore this gem of a gallery and attend an hourly tour of their inaugural exhibit Àdisòkàmagan / Nous connaître un peu nous-mêmes / We’ll all become stories. This two day event also boasts a slew of other fun activities: make your mark and take part in a collective sculpture made of the packing material from their move, see some tai chi on the terrace on Sunday morning, or create your own stop motion animation in the studio. Check out their website for a full list of activities.

This Saturday afternoon, Fury FC take on FC Cincinnati in their second home game of the year. Head on down to TD Place to cheer them on in what is, hopefully, their first win of the season!

For those who long for the times when Double Barrel was a monthly thing, you won’t want to miss Double Barrel at the 27 Club this Saturday, with DJs Magnificent and Bjorn Late. The original DB DJs will be on the decks, bringing you the best of vintage funk, soul, reggae and rocksteady – all on 45’s.

Well folks, that’s a wrap on this jam-packed spring weekend! The weather looks lovely, even with a little bit of grey skies and rain clouds this Saturday, so get out there and enjoy! Take lots of photos, so we can see what you all get up to. Hashtag them with #apt613 for your chance to be featured on our feed.
