Weekend Roundup: Quoi faire ?

By Kiersten Vuorimaki on June 13, 2019

Mid June has arrived, and with it, the warm weather and festivals! This weekend there are so many cool things to do that span a few days or more, that it’s going to be a doozy trying to fit everything in! My professional advice is to start with 613 Day and fill the weekend with as much as you can handle from there!

All Weekend

The Ottawa Champions are home all weekend, hosting the Cuban National Team Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The boys of summer have been doing well lately with the warmer weather, so even if its raining, expect some serious heat. Friday night is $5 Bud night and Saturday night is $5 Big Rig beers night with fireworks at the park after the game.

It’s Ottawa Fringe Festival time again! This is the first weekend of Fringe, which runs until the 23rd. Check out a teaser review here of a few shows, but by all means hit as many of the shows as you can! The productions will be performed at different venues around town, so you can feasibly hit multiple shows an evening!

Glowfair is taking over Centretown again with all of the colours, and sounds of our favourite annual street party Friday and Saturday. There is a great lineup of entertainment on the main stage including Stars on Friday night and Coeur de Pirate on Saturday. The Silent Disco is on both nights after the headliner, so plan on staying on Bank Street for the duration. Stay hydrated friends!

Friday and Saturday, Montebello Rock is back in a new, more intimate format across the river. Tickets are still available for the weekend camping experience as well as the shows. Venom, MXPX and Black Flag are just a few of the 30 bands performing over the weekend. There is also an impressive craft beer lineup.

The Ottawa Italian Festival is taking over Preston street all weekend for extended patios, car shows, a race or two and family friendly programming. Artist Brenda Dunn will be continuing her Living Colouring Book project with a new public mural during the festival as well. Preston Street will be closed to cars beginning Friday evening, so plan your transportation and parking ahead of time!

It’s 613 Day in Ottawa, and Thursday June 13th is the perfect day to celebrate our city, and the communities of people who make it special. You’re coming to our block party at Happy Goat on Laurel, right?

Capital Pop-Up Cinema is showing Mean Girls on Friday night on Sparks Street between O’Connor and Metcalfe for their 2019 season opener. Get there early for the 8:30pm start time, and get your $2 popcorn! It’s BYOChair, but free to attend!

If French language testing is a fact of your life, or you’re interested in getting more comfortable in your second language, l’Alliance Francaise Ottawa holds a monthly games night exclusively for French language learners. Registration is only $10 for non-members of the Alliance, but you do need to register ahead of time. The event is in Centretown from 6:15 to 8pm.

Do you identify as a lady? Do you like beer? Overflow Brewery is hosting the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies for a fantastic beer based popup event in their taproom, with a women’s makers market as well. These events sell out quickly and the tickets are available online for $20-45.

Double header outdoor movie weekend? Capital Pop-Up is showing The Sandlot in Parkdale Park at 8:30ish Saturday night. Movies begin at dusk on the dot. (Precisely Dusk). You can rent a chair for $5, and get some popcorn for $2. Nothing says summer like the timeless mythology of an evening of baseball.

It’s Father’s Day on Sunday, so take the day to celebrate the father figures in your life, whether that be the man who raised you, the friend who makes sure you get home safe on the weekends, or that buddy who can’t hang out late anymore because he’s now a dad. Buy that friend a beer. Maybe offer to babysit?
