Weekend Roundup: 613 Day Edition

We’ve got a big weekend ahead. As Ottawa enters Stage 2 of reopening, we’ll also be celebrating 613 Day, a birthday party of sorts for Ottawa and Apt613. In past years we’ve come together to celebrate all that makes our city great but this year we’ll be celebrating individually.

In a way, this is the perfect way to celebrate 613 Day: head out and find the local business, restaurant, patio or brewery that means the most to you and join us in a toast to our fair city at 6:13pm on 6/13, wherever you may be in the 613. (PS – we’ll be toasting with Kichesippi’s limited edition 613 IPA brew)

Read on for some ways to celebrate on the town or from the comfort of your own home, plus some special 613 Day and #SupportLocal promos.

All weekend

What better way to kick off 613 Day Weekend than with a tight playlist of #ottmusic jams. The House of PainT crew curated this hour and a half long playlist with Ottawa acts that have played HoP since its origins in 2003. Everybody from A Tribe Called Red to The Souljazz Orchestra. Listen on Spotify or listen on the blog.

Nevermind Netflix. Mirror Mountain Film Festival has curated a short film playlist of fourteen Ottawa-made films for your 613 Day weekend watch party. Queue up the YouTube playlist here or get the video-by-video breakdown of this special program here.

The CHEO BBQ started 28 years ago as a regular ol’ backyard cookout with family and friends. What made this ordinary gathering extraordinary was that these special people ended up passing around a hat to collect money for CHEO. 28 years later, that “little BBQ that could” has grown into Ottawa’s largest backyard barbecue that raises money for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Folks may be unable to gather at Shefford Park this year, but you’re invited to your own backyard to participate in the CHEO BBQ this weekend from June 12–14. Go to Facebook for more info.

The Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival has moved online from June 1-21 and features arts & crafts, culinary workshops, interactive cultural programming, a social distance pow wow and more. This weekend, try your hand at making sealskin earrings on Saturday or foraged traditional teas on Sunday.

Thursday

While the National Arts Centre has announced that they will be extending their closure until August 31, they have also announced that starting this Thursday June 11, the #RoadToCanadaDay series will present and livestream over 25 festivals until June 30, including the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Dawson City Music Festival, Folks on the Rock, and the Halifax Jazz Festival. Here in town, the Ottawa Jazz Festival is presenting Tenacity, a series of online performances starting June 19 in lieu of the usual festival at Confederation Park.

Friday

It’s not every year 6/13 falls on a weekend. So that’s what this is: a 613 Day Weekend! Starting the celebrations bright and early is The Morning Shift on CHUO 89.1FM. Tune in (or stream online) from 7am–9am when Cody Coyote and host DJ Daddy Rich will be on the show.

Yolande Laroche is a classically trained clarinetist and a teacher at OrKidstra. This Friday at 3pm, she’ll be streaming a live performance from her project mal/aimé. The 20 minute set will feature loops and pedals on clarinet and piano, followed by a Q&A where she’ll talk about her instruments/pedals and her experience as a classical artist using technology to explore sound.

Saturday

Curated by the festival’s Artistic Director Chris Robinson, the Ottawa International Animation Festival is serving EyeCANdy for 613 Day (PASSWORD: Apt613). Films in the program include Charlie Tyrell’s Oscar nominated My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes, and Valerie Barnhart’s Vimeo Award-winner Girl in the Hallway—plus many more. Dig this collection of Canadian independent animated shorts that showcases an amazing range of styles and stories from the OIAF.

You’ve got the 613 Day X House of PainT playlist on. You’re grooving. Now let’s start moving! Arnaldo “Effect” Betancourt Silva will be leading a free 613 Day breakdance class on @moovottawa IG at 11am. Beginner level, all ages.

Join us and Kichesippi brewery live as we toast the 613 at 6:13pm! We will meet up live on @kichesippibeer (Instagram) at 6pm. Bring your favourite beverage or, if there’s still time, order Kichesippi’s limited edition 613 IPA brew, the official beer of 613 Day in Ottawa!

Heavy Friends are laying down an all-genre all-Ottawa mix on CKCU 93.1 FM from 8pm–10pm. Tune in to this special 613 Day set by DJs Jas Nasty, Heavy Ben and Pink Veil. Apologies in advance to neighbours of Apartment613… we’ll be blasting the radio!

Closing out 613 Day will be a *special edition* TIMEKODE set from 10pm until midnight. DJs Memetic and Zattar have been holding it down in pandemic-land by streaming frequently and fundraising for local music spaces and space makers. Tune in on YouTube or Twitch for the best audio quality.

Sunday

The Musicians of the National Arts Centre Orchestra are hosting a fundraiser for the Ottawa Food Bank this Sunday. Tune in at noon for a virtual Summer FanFair. The Musicians of the NACO will be hosting a watch party or you can stream directly on the Ottawa Food Bank’s Facebook page.

Reserve a time slot to visit the Ottawa Farmers’ Market at Lansdowne and then enjoy visiting the market and local vendors. You are encouraged to pre-purchase online but can also purchase goods on the spot. Learn more about how Ottawa’s markets have adapted in these two articles: Beechwood Market and the Ottawa Markets (home to ByWard Market and Parkdale Market). Latest reports say ByWard and Parkdale will be opening the week of June 15 so stay tuned for more.
