Judy's garden in The Glebe was #12 on our shortlist in 2021.

We are searching for Ottawa’s Best Home Garden once again!

By Apartment613 on April 20, 2022

Last summer, Apt613 launched Ottawa’s Best Home Garden, an initiative aimed at showcasing Ottawa’s green thumb and fine folks who are augmenting the beauty of our city.

Over a couple of weekends, volunteers for Apartment613 quietly distributed special door hangers throughout Ottawa. It was a way for Apt613 volunteers to recognize the best gardens in their neighbourhoods—so if you got one last summer, congrats!

We had 94 wonderful Ottawa gardeners join the competition, with the top prize winner taking home a $250 gift card to Les Serres Robert Plante Greenhouses. Folks were able to enter the competition online by registering their garden and submitting photos of their greenery and flowers at their best either on their own accord or after receiving a door hanger recognition and being nominated that way.

This year, the contest is expanding! First, we are introducing a new category—balcony gardening! Participants will be able to submit photos of either their backyard and front yard gardens or their balcony gardens. The winner of each category will receive a prize. Second, the contest will now run for longer, because we know you may have a gorgeous peony bloom in May or late-bloom July flowers. This way, you can submit photos of your garden at its best throughout the entire summer, from May 4th until late August.

We know Ottawa has a green thumb that is modestly unacknowledged despite the unique character it imposes upon our town. Neighbourhoods like Vanier, Centretown, and the Glebe are where you’ll find large homes well over 100 years old—many of which have been converted into apartments—with the space for a beautiful garden on the property.

In that vein, Ottawa’s Best Home Garden is a grassroots summer contest organized by volunteers at Apartment613—really for fun, because we don’t (yet) have a garden to tend to at Apt613!

How it works

Starting with May 4th, you will be able to register to be eligible for prizes. You’ll be asked to attach up to three recent photos of your garden. You may wait until later in the summer to register. Or register twice and our jury will decide what looks best!

Look out for a door hanger in late May, when we will begin our outreach. If you’d like to help with outreach of scouting out Ottawa’s best home gardens, send us a line to with #BestGarden613 in the subject line.

The winners of the grand prizes (prizes to be announced) in their respective categories will be announced on on August 30, 2022.
