Wardrobe Refresh: 11 of Ottawa’s best vintage and consignment shops

By Grace O'Manique on April 29, 2022

It’s that time of year again when we Canadians leave hibernation to make the most of the warm sunny weather. It is also at this time many of us look into our closets and feel the need for a refresh. Luckily, Ottawa has many consignment and vintage spots where we can freshen up our wardrobes in an efficient, fun, and sustainable way. Out with the old and in with the new(ish).

The Ottawa vintage and consignment clothing scene has been flourishing as of late. We now have a fantastic variety of fashions, from 1900s vintage to streetwear to wedding dresses to designer consignment and everything in between. There is surely something out there for everyone, no matter your style, so here is your guide to some of Ottawa’s best vintage and consignment spots.

Bellwethers Vintage

Centretown is the home of many of Ottawa’s best vintage shops. This includes Bellwethers Vintage, a marvellous retro-inspired space filled with only true vintage pieces from the 1900s to the 2000s. This shop buys mainly from estates since the best stuff is hanging out in people’s closets, and all pieces are washed and pressed.

“We focus on bringing in higher-end vintage labels, natural fibres, and pieces that are beautifully made. Lots of items from France and Italy. Both classic wardrobe staples and wild crazy unique pieces,” says Madison Kelly, co-owner of Bellwethers Vintage.

Trove Fashion

Trove Fashion is a lovely consignment boutique located in the neighbourhood of Hintonburg that has a collection of stylish and high-quality second-hand clothing. The store prefers to focus more on function, quality, and style, rather than designer labels, so this spot is a great option to find the latest trends and great quality pieces at affordable prices.

Ragtime Vintage

As Ottawa’s oldest vintage store, you are bound to find a special vintage piece at Ragtime Vintage, located in Centretown. Well known for its purple storefront and floor-to-ceiling selections, Ragtime is the perfect spot for a true vintage shopping experience with a unique collection of clothing, accessories, and of course, costumes!

Bad Dog Co.

Bad Dog Co, located in the Glebe, is one of Ottawa’s newest curated vintage shops. This is a prime spot to buy, sell, and trade vintage and second-hand streetwear essentials such as graphic tees, caps, denim pieces, and jackets. The space has a great minimal industrial look and feel, letting the racks of clothing be the focal point for an effortless shopping experience.

Vintage Pop-Up 613

This is a unique one on the list, as it is not a permanent store location, but rather a travelling vintage pop-up shop in and around the 613 area.

“Our mission is to make sustainable shopping more accessible and exciting while supporting small resellers, artists and makers who care about environmental and ethical consumption,” say Vintage Pop-Up 613 founders Aida and Elena. You can attend events such as parking lot pop-ups and Mystique Markets, where you can find a curated collection of vendors selling not only vintage clothing and accessories but also homewares and handmade goods.

The Recollective

If you are looking to buy or consign designer and contemporary pieces, head to Wellington West to check out Ottawa’s newest consignment space, The Recollective. This shop, run by two sisters, was formerly known as Preloved Ottawa and underwent a rebrand that included opening a new location: a light and contemporary space that complements the beautiful collection of second-hand clothing and accessories for sale.

The Clothes Secret

The Clothes Secret is one of Ottawa’s oldest consignment spots and is a go-to for many regular consignors and shoppers. The shop is located in Old Ottawa South and features a wide range of women’s second-hand clothing with friendly and helpful service.

Darling Vintage

If you frequent Somerset Street, you must be familiar with Darling Vintage’s gorgeous retro storefront displays. As one of Ottawa’s vintage go-to’s, this boutique features retro clothing, accessories, and even wedding gowns!

“We have a large vintage wedding dress section offering a more casual shopping experience to the less-fussy, eco-friendly, and cost-conscious bride,” states the shop’s Facebook page.

Fly Market

Fly Market holds vintage events in the Ottawa area, bringing together artists, designers, and curated vintage fashion retailers for a fun and unique shopping experience. You can find the best vintage streetwear and designer pieces while also meeting and mingling with people big in the Ottawa fashion community. These events usually have DJs and food trucks, and the company has even done a collaboration event with Urban Outfitters.

Clothes Encounters of a Second Time

Clothes Encounters of a Second Time is a designer consignment store located just between Lindenlea and Vanier North. This store offers a wide variety of brands and strives to create a fun experience for customers while helping them discover their unique style through second-hand clothing.

Paul’s Vintage

Paul’s Vintage is a small vintage shop located in a charming yellow-painted building in the buzzing Byward Market. Here you can find great vintage clothing and accessories for all genders in a space filled with vintage trinkets and decor.
