Video of the Week: “Subtle Siren Song” by Hilotrons

By Apartment613 on January 7, 2021

Experimental pop composer Mike Dubue has just released his eighth LP as Hilotrons. The record is called Lonely Cinema and upon its arrival Hilotrons put out this music video cut to “Subtle Siren Song” (track 2 on the new album).

Featuring Caylie Runciman of Boyhood on vocals, this sweet tune was a recent pick in our #ottmusic weekly Spotify playlist. The new Hilotrons music video is directed and edited by Mike Dubue himself.

The video is a super psychedelic experience. Colours, shapes and patterns created by Hard Science aka Arturo Brisindi, using visual effects processors, is combined with film footage from 1963’s The Flaming Creatures by experimental artist Jack Smith.

The police were called on Jack Smith the night of its New York premiere and officers seized this film. Soon after, The Flaming Creatures was banned in 22 U.S. states and five countries.
