Zimbabwean-Canadian musician Tumelo Ponalo, aka MELO-T aka Music by Melo is one of the most unique hip hop artists working in Ottawa today. Drawing inspiration from African artists such as DJ Black Coffee as well as his Canadian contemporaries like Kaytranada, MELO-T’s music is a highly melodic form of Afro-fusion. In 2020, he released several singles and an EP called Melodies, which includes this eponymous track, now a music video.
Directed by Geneviève Boudreau, shot and coloured by Jacquelyn Cooney, the clip for “Melodies” takes us into nature with a group of friends in their happy place. Set to his funky and groovy bass lines, MELO-T’s crew can be seen laughing and sharing some great memories together, embracing the positive uplifting vibes that set the tone of the video.
“The song and video aim to express the idea that through music, one can embrace multiple layers of identity, freedom, culture, and diversity,” says Ponalo, “as well as a focus on showcasing local Ottawa talent and engaging youth to pursue their dreams of artistic expression through music.”
