Video of the Week: Kathryn Patricia’s “Sound in Living Colour”

By Greggory Clark on July 29, 2020

Ottawa-based composer Kathryn Patricia performed this live 30-minute set for Shenkman Arts Centre’s summer streaming series. With this program, artists and doodlers are encouraged to grab markers, paints or crayons and join in creating art inspired by the contemporary composer’s musical soundscapes, “Sound in Living Colour.”

Kathryn Patricia is a violist known for creating immersive music by building textures with the layers that her instrument and loop pedal produce. The emerging artist’s career in Ottawa has led to performing with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra, and Toronto’s Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Patricia moonlights composing original music for theatre productions. She has also been known to collaborate with other composers, premiering pieces by Ottawa composers Mika Posen and Raphael Weinroth-Browne. On top of writing and performance, she is a Teaching Artist with OrKidstra, a social development program that empowers local kids with life skills through music.

Kathryn has released not one, but four new records during the pandemic—From The Ground Up is her most recent EP, preceded by Selah in March, Inner Roads in May, and Catch The Rising Sun in June—all available on Bandcamp.
