The opening of Ottawa-based band Neverfriend’s “Hurts to Breathe” features lead singer Gina desperately pleading for some love and relief, a vulnerability echoed in the images of a woman’s bare back covered in intricate flower tattoos. As the song progresses, however, the lyrics, the vocals and the instrumentals all build-up, fully expressing the angst and pain of unrequited love. Although not a full-blown metal or rock tune, Neverfriend delivers in its lyrics and provides listeners with a passionate yet composed sound.
Neverfriend, first founded in 2006, are Gina, Fraser, Logan and Mike. “Hurts to Breathe” is the first single off the band’s recently released CD Evolve.
You can catch them at the official CD launch at Mavericks on the 24th, where they will also say farewell to bass player, Logan Benett.
Neverfriend play Maverick’s (221 Rideau St) on Saturday, January 24, 2015. They’ll be joined by Emma’s Ringer and The Big Muffs. Doors are at 8pm. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.
