When’s the last time you played Microsoft Flight Simulator? If your first experience with Flight Sim was in the ’80s or ’90s, you’ll be blown away by the current state of this software.
In this video, we get to follow on the tail of a virtual pilot who is flying around real-life Ottawa for a good 15 minutes. They take off in a small aircraft from the Canada Space and Aviation Museum, head down the Ottawa River, and soar past oh so many sights.
If you have good bearings, you may even spot your apartment building or neighbourhood baseball diamond. The level of detail is remarkable.
The video is set to music which nerds (!) will recognize as Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. As it appears the YouTuber is not in fact based in Ottawa, this could be a coincidence—or maybe a nod to Ottawa’s Ceremonial Guard marching band, which regularly performs the 1812 for tourists at Parliament Hill.
