If there’s one thing we learned in this year’s March Madness Neighborhood Wars, it’s that Ottawa’s appearance of unity is just a polite facade covering deep-seated sectarian divisions. Some of these are geographical: members of the Hintonburg Army will turn at the drop of a hat to verbally savage what it views to be weaker neighbourhoods, while residents of superpower Centretown lazily assume their cultural hegemony will last forever. Other divisions revolve around food: there are some who will tear you a new one for doubting that Hintonburger makes the best burger in town, and getting in the way of Truffle Treasure addict on the way to their fix may get you killed (or a least a dirty look). That doesn’t even cover other forms of local allegiance: music, fashion, politics, and personalities. The list goes on.
Apartment613 believes it’s time to bring these issues out in the open. Time to declare your allegiances, Ottawa! And what better way to promote your favourite (or degrade your least favourite) thing about the National Capital Region than to put it on a t-shirt?
The Great Apt613 t-shirt contest asks artists from Ottawa and beyond to create their own interpretation of Ottawa, be it based on its best or worst features. Over the next month-and-a-half, we’re inviting all artists, designers and stick-figure aficionados to submit an original design you think represents the city: one of its neighborhoods, a street, a landmark, a famed personality – basically, whatever you associate with Ottawa. You can go as literal or abstract as you’d like.
The editors of Apt613 will select the 10 designs they like best, and from this shortlist we’ll let you, our readers, pick the top three to print. Once the designs have been chosen, our plan is get them printed on t-shirts, which we’ll sell as a fundraiser for the site (and remember, we’re a not-for-profit).
The top three designers will be featured on Apt613 and will receive a cash prize: $100 for 3rd place, $200 for 2nd and $300 for top design. All three t-shirts will be put into production.
Your design can be painted, drawn, photographed or created entirely on the computer. But however you create it, it must be submitted by email to email@example.com with Apt613 t-shirt in the subject line.
If you drew your design digitally, make sure it’s at a high resolution, as well. You can create your design in any digital art program that will allow you to save your image as a .jpg, .gif, .png or .fla file. Acceptable digital art programs include Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash, as well as Gimp, Inkscape, and many others.
The deadline is July 30, 2011 at 11:59 PM EST. Entries will not be accepted after July 30, 2011 (11:59 PM EST).
