Animation aficionados rejoice! It’s Ottawa International Animation Festival season once again, with five full days of fantastical images and stories from Canada and around the world being presented on the big screen.
Now in its 39th year, the OIAF is a well-established fixture on the Ottawa festival scene, and a much loved and anticipated one at that. I always encourage people to attend who have never explored this event series, as it is a particularly unique one. With animators hailing from multiple countries including Italy, France, Estonia and Australia, attendees will be exposed to stories and images that carry the distinctive feel of the animator, but can at times also reflect a social history or political narrative particular to their country. The culmination of so many different styles, experiences and values provides a truly unique way to experience story-telling.
For first time attendees, I always recommend the Short Film Competitions and one or all of the Showcase Screenings. This allows the attendee to experience a multitude of animators and stories within a single screening – best bang for your buck!
And speaking of bucks, a single screening adult pass is $13.00 with all other single screening passes priced at $9.00. You can also purchase an Animation Six-Pack for $65.00 which will get you six tickets for the price of five. If you’re interested in some of the pass options, there are day, weekend and full festival passes available.
I do recommend that if you’re planning on attending multiple screenings, build yourself a little schedule of what you plan to see first. This will help you figure out which ticket or pass option is best for you. Also keep an eye out for multiple screenings. If you have two features you’d like to see but they have conflicting times, check for a second screening. You may still be able to fit in everything you want!
The festival begins today, Wednesday September 16th, and runs until Sunday September 20th. Now go feast your eyes on some animation goodness!
