TGIM? Showcase Mondays returns to Zaphod Beeblebrox!

By Kelsey Sunstrum on August 28, 2014

Does one ever look forward to a Monday? With legendary night club, Zaphod Beeblebrox, reviving their Showcase Mondays, the beginning of your week doesn’t have to seem so bleak.

Showcase Mondays was a former staple at Zaphod’s until health problems forced owner, Eugene Haslam, to cease the event. A few years later the show is re-launching, though staying true to its original format. This time around, however, it will be hosted by folk duo, Archy & Mehitabel. Eric St-Cyr of Archy & Mehitabel, as well as the Communications Representative for Zaphod’s says this will give the weekly event a sense of familiarity.

The weekly event is a free show comprised of local and independent musicians and the occasional touring band. Showcase Mondays not only offers bands the opportunity to gain experience, it exposes Ottawa’s music lovers to new music. This type of accessible event is not only crucial to emerging artists, it’s also a really fun, affordable night out where you can share your passion for local music with like-minded people. You may be watching the next new ‘it’ band; acts such as The Sheepdogs and Hot Hot Heat have played Showcase Mondays.

Showcase MondaysAs a musician himself, St-Cyr is looking to include as much added value as possible for the participating musicians. Free backline is provided by local shops Spaceman Music and Dave’s Drum Shop. St-Cyr also extends musicians half-off recording sessions, a necessary component to the success of any musician but is often quite costly.

Showcase Mondays will re-launch September 1, 2014 and doors will open at 8pm. If you’re itching for new music in the interim, Eric suggests checking out local bands Tribe Royal, The Ginger Fox, Old Whiskey Road, and Arms of The Girl.
