Takeout Talk: What are you ordering this weekend?

By Apartment613 on February 5, 2021

In this weekly feature, Apt613 asks blog contributors and local figures about their takeout habits and highlights—to help you find new tasty treats to discover or revisit when you’re just OVER IT with making dinner. We want to hear about the takeout you loved! Leave comments below and if you’d like to contribute to a future edition of Takeout Talk, email <>.

Editor’s note: Under the Ontario stay-at-home order, restaurants offering takeout and delivery are permitted to operate; please follow all recommended public health and safety protocols when picking up food or accepting delivery—and tip generously if you can. Check the hours of the restaurant prior to ordering as those offering alcohol must close by 8pm.

I was craving a hearty pizza but wanted something other than the usual delivery. I picked up two pizzas from Big Rig, the All Dressed and the Philly Cheesesteak, and they did not disappoint. The right balance of crunch and cheesy goodness, paired with a solid amount of toppings. Definitely worth the trip to Big Rig on Iris/Greenbank.

If you’re in the mood for a four-course meal and ready for an upgrade from the usual takeout fare, consider picking up the Weekend Meal for Two from The Whalesbone on Elgin. Every course had its own unique flavour and made you long for the next. The take-home package was more than enough for two, with mozzarella croquettes, a citrus salad, and octopus ragu with broccolini and sausage for the main. The dessert, a lemon meringue cheesecake, ended the meal on a high note, singing in your happy mouth.

Last Friday, we had to drive out to Orleans to drop off some belated birthday gifts to my awesome brother-in-law, so we leaped at the opportunity to order from our favourite east-end spot, Persis Grill, and bring it home with us to the west end. A go-to for family celebrations, this fabulous strip-mall joint has some of the best kebabs in the city, including the stunning Torsh kebab: huge chunks of incredibly tender sirloin steak marinated in pomegranate molasses and ground walnuts (and you can actually taste both). We always choose to upgrade to the shirin polo rice, which adds chopped walnuts, sliced almonds, dried cranberries, orange zest and cinnamon to fluffy Basmati rice drizzled with saffron. A crunchy salad rounds out the platter and brightens everything up. Don’t sleep on Persis Grill, my friends.

To celebrate a self-imposed three-day weekend, my roommate and I decided to order in. Craving traditional pub fare, we settled on Churchills Pub in Westboro. Reminiscing on summer days on their beautiful rooftop patio, my roommate ordered the buffalo wrap, which comes stuffed with a caesar salad on top of the chicken! I desperately wanted a club sandwich and lo and behold, Churchills had a club wrap on the menu. It was so satisfying and delicious — the smoked turkey breast combined with smoked bacon (never too much smoke on my food), lemon-basil aioli, and the crunchiest lettuce ever was perfection. And maybe I haven’t had tortillas in a while, but the soft shell on the wrap was great too.
