Forget tulips—the true sign of spring is the return of Yakko Takko. The Mexican food truck shut down over the winter but has recently reopened and is back serving up some of the tastiest food in Ottawa. Currently closed Mondays but open for lunch from 11:30am–3:30pm and dinner from 5:30-9pm Tuesday to Sunday, a recent order was the highlight of my week and I’m already planning a return visit. Literally everything I’ve tried has been delicious. The menu is composed of chips and guacamole, takkos (or tacos, if you’re a stickler for spelling), quesadillas and burritos in a delicious variety of flavours. You can even specify how spicy you want your food when ordering. We learned the hard way last year that guacamole is limited so order early to be sure you get some. The truck is parked at 1082 Somerset Street West in a parking lot behind an apartment building and has ample space to socially distance. Note that payment is cash only. If you go at peak dinner time, you might find a bit of a wait, so today’s pro tip is to call ahead and place your order. Alternatively, while waiting for your order, you can go for a stroll down Somerset/Wellington and pick up some beer from Tooth and Nail or some dessert at Suzy Q. The food is well-packaged and travels well, but I’m looking forward to a summer day in the hopefully-not-too-distant future where I can pick up a few takkos and enjoy a picnic in a local park.

I had a hankering for poutine but our regular place was really busy (hot tip: don’t wait until peak pandemic and peak dinner time to do an online order!) so we ventured out and tried something new. The closest La Poutinerie to us is out on Ogilvie (we’re in Greenboro/South Keys) and I was super impressed with how quickly we got our delivery. Poutine travels fairly well to be sure, but it was piping hot and delish! We went the non-traditional route and had the Buffalo Chicken and the Club poutines… so incredibly good. I’ve been thinking about it for days since. Will definitely be ordering again!
