Takeout Talk: What are you ordering this weekend?

While Takeout Talk is all about discovery, I’ve been putting the focus on old favourites lately. I hadn’t ordered from Das Lokal on Dalhousie in over a year, and that had to change. The dinner we enjoyed last weekend was a game changer—I could not be more stoked that Das Lokal has joined the growing list of restaurants offering delivery via GetIt Local, the Ottawa-made food delivery app designed to rival Uber Eats, Door Dash, et cetera. Curbside pickup is also an option.

There’s a code in our household that takeout is “not worth it” unless leftovers are a part of the equation. Our hefty order included Das Vegan Bowl ($18), the German hamburger with side salad ($20, and on a freaking delicious bun, I might add), a generous portion of roasted and sautéed winter vegetables ($7), house cut fries ($5), and house slaw ($4) for two of us to share. Cooking with the leftovers stretched this dinner into the following day’s breakfast and lunch as well.

While stereotypical German food is quite “beige”… sausage, schnitzel, hamburger, lentils, roasted cauliflower, potato… Chefs Harriet Clunie and Marie Ford are making amazing dishes with these ingredients. For an update, this recent IG post says Ford and Clunie will be creating more “flexitarian” options for vegans and vegetarians, and introducing cocktails to go. Prost!

Clearly, it’s old favourites week on Takeout Talk! I’ve been going to Chances “R” in Nepean since I was a little kid growing up in Barrhaven. So has my husband, who grew up even closer, in Ryan Farm. We sometimes wonder if we might both have been there with our families at the same time, but we’ll never know, since we didn’t meet until high school. The original dining room, housed in a narrow strip mall that was part of Shoppers City West, is long gone, replaced in 2003 by a big, shiny new space at the back corner of College Square, complete with epic covered patio. But I still remember the old green pleather chairs and heavily varnished tables, and the food still tastes the same to me. It’s a “family restaurant” with a wide variety of old-school, diner-esque menu items. Tonight we’re getting two of our respective favourites: the Chicken Parmesan, which is huge and comes with a side of spaghetti with meat sauce plus garlic bread; and the Big Julie, a giant salad topped with julienned (get it?) ham, roasted chicken breast, cheddar, cucumbers, tomatoes, and hard-boiled egg, plus dressing of choice (I always get ranch). It’s comfort food on all levels that never fails to make us feel better, no matter what’s happening in the world. This rainy day needs a warm and cozy ending, and I know we’ll get it.
