#Support613 Gift Guide: Food and drink

By Apartment613 on December 3, 2021

Welcome to Part 3 of Apartment613’s 2021 local holiday gift guide! Visit apt613.ca/#Support613 often for new suggestions.

It’s Foodie Friday here on Apartment 613, so let’s talk today about delicious locally-produced gifts of food and drink to give friends and family this holiday season.

Gee’s Bees
538 River Rd

The folks behind Gee’s Bees found a colony of honeybees living in the WALL of their HOUSE back in 2009. Instead of immediately moving (which I would have done), they rescued the bees; now, they are beekeepers by profession. They sell a wide variety of honey, as well as beeswax candles and other gifts.

Apt613 pick: The Holiday Honey care package includes a selection of three jars of honey, packaged beautifully for giving with free delivery in Ottawa.

Anna Stubbe Chocolates
500 Hazeldean Rd

Anna is the daughter of Heinrich Stubbe and worked with him for many years at his ByWard Market shop. Now she has her own store where she creates beautiful and delicious confections, including truffles, bonbons, chocolate bars, and a range of vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free items.

Apt613 picks: This stunning chocolate Christmas tree filled with colourful presents is completely edible, though it might be hard to bring yourself to do it. Another fun one for families is this chocolate and candy-filled Smash Santa complete with a tiny hammer! Makes a great one-day alternative to the advent calendar.

KIN Vineyards
2225 Craig’s Side Rd, Carp

This local vineyard offers a range of wines made with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes grown on-site in Carp, as well as some other varietals. If you’re shopping for a big wine fan, consider a subscription to the KINfolk club, a wine subscription service.

Apt613 pick: The KINdling sparkling wine is a balanced, delicious sipper that goes well with most foods (especially with salty or fried things) but is equally good on its own for a celebratory toast.

Nat’s Bread Company
857 Boyd Ave

Offering over a dozen varieties of bread (plus pastries and seasonal treats), Nat’s Bread is all made in the old-world artisanal style with a sourdough starter.

Apt613 pick: The bi-weekly bread subscription packages would make a delicious gift that keeps on giving! Choose from three customizable options.

Top Shelf Preserves
527 Gladstone

We featured Top Shelf Preserves in last year’s guide but didn’t want you to miss the fact that they have opened a brand-new storefront at 527 Gladstone! Check their Instagram for opening hours or shop online for a wide selection of jams, jellies, pickles and other preserves made here in Ottawa with fresh ingredients.

Apt613 pick: We bet the blueberry-gin jam would be excellent with some of Nat’s sourdough! Or drop one of their fine maraschino cherries into a Manhattan.

Vox Kombucha
Wakefield, QC

“Fizzy fermented tea” is how the folks behind Vox describe their kombucha, which they brew in three fruity flavours: elderberry, apple ginger, and raspberry. They also use all-organic ingredients, sourced locally wherever possible.

Apt13 pick: A one-litre bottle of ‘booch would make a lovely gift if you know the recipient’s favourite flavour. Vox also brews three kinds of hot sauce for the spice fiend in your life.

Bar From Afar

An innovative service, Bar From Afar delivers craft cocktail kits to your door with ingredients pre-measured, so you get exactly the amount you need with no wasted leftovers or highly specialized spirits languishing on your bar cart for years. Whether they like gin, whiskey, vodka, rum, tequila, or all of the above, there’s a drink here for everyone.

Apt613 pick: The Mixer BFA kit lets you select six drinks for your lucky gift recipient from their list of classic and creative cocktails.

Papa Jack Popcorn
2184 Thurston Dr

With over a dozen flavours of gourmet popcorn, plus candy, cheesecakes, and more, Papa Jack Popcorn is your destination if snacks are on your gift list. The usual popcorn suspects like caramel, cheddar, and salt & vinegar are joined by Jamaican jerk, bacon, and pink cotton candy flavours, as well as something called “Kaboom!”

Apt613 pick: The Surprise Box of 28 snack-sized bags makes a great gift for a family or someone who loves to try new things. For the lover of sweet and salty things, try the Indulgent Bundle: a jar of caramel popcorn and one of chocolate-drizzled caramel popcorn.

Team Spirit
Via Burrow Shop

Team Spirit offers four fabulous flavours of syrup that can be blended with alcohol for a cocktail or sparkling water for a refreshing beverage that’s more interesting than soda. Made with local, seasonal produce, get them through Burrow Shop AKA: Buchipop.

Apt613 pick: With flavours like Peach and Yellow Pepper, White Currant and Juniper, Rhubarb Vanilla, and Strawberry Balsamic (sold out at the moment – sob!), how can we choose just one?
